Shrek Audition Information

We are very excited to be staging Shrek in June this year and are looking for a wonderful, enthusiastic cast of juniors to make this production come to life. Anyone aged from 6 years (as of 1st January 2019) to 21 years is welcome and warmly encouraged to audition.

STORYLINE - Shrek is a timeless classic, a story recognised by children and adults alike. The stage show storyline is much like the original film version of Shrek. The junior version still has all the comedy elements and wonderful, catchy tunes of the full stage version, it’s just not as long….perfect for a family show!

AUDITIONS – sessions will be held at The Little Theatre, Cnr of Bogan and Dalton Streets on Monday 18th March at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm and Thursday 21st March at 6pm & 7pm. You only need to attend one of these sessions. Audition groups will be taken in on each hour - please come 15 minutes prior to the session to fill out your audition form and allow for about 45 minutes to complete your audition. We know how daunting auditions can be and promise to make this a fun and relaxed experience for everyone who wishes to be a part of this wonderful production. If you can’t make these dates or have any questions regarding auditions please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

ROLES – There are many spoken roles in this production. However, the main roles are Fiona, Shrek, Donkey and Farquaad, with semi leads for Dragon, Pinocchio, Story teller, Young and Teen Fiona, Mama and Papa Ogre. You may be asked to read for a part. There are some short scriptings in the links below. You don’t need to know any of these off by heart, but it would be great to read over them, especially if you are auditioning for a lead role.

AUDITION SONGS - a short list of songs are listed below for you to choose your audition piece from. Chose the song you love the most, will show off your vocal ability and you can sing comfortably. While we really don’t mind what song you choose to sing, we do encourage anyone auditioning for a lead role to sing a song which that particular character sings. All songs with lyrics and backing tracks can be downloaded by clicking on the links provided below:

CHOREOGRAPHY - for Shrek will be lots of fun. It will be a short, simple, repetitive piece that will be taught at auditions as a group. There is no need to prepare other than to wear sensible, closed in shoes and bring a bottle of water.

RESEARCH - If you are serious about gaining a role (and there are lots of great roles in this production) it’s a great idea to do some research on the stage production. We do expect the leads (Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Farquaard) to attempt similar vocal accents as the movie or Broadway stage versions. There are many good renditions on you tube. Below are just a few of the audition pieces to give you a bit of an idea (keep in mind some of these are a little different to the Junior adaption):

TOO SHY? - If being on stage is not really your thing, there are plenty of other opportunities for you to be involved. Whether it be operating sound effects, lighting, backstage with sets and props or assisting with makeup and face-painting, we need you! Theatre is a wonderful platform to meet now people, make new friends and make memories that will last a lifetime.

DATES - If cast, it’s important to be available for rehearsals and all show dates. Rehearsals commence on 10th April and will be Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. There will be some intense rehearsals workshops from 15th to 18th April, from 9.00am to 1.00pm which cast members should be available for – this is the first week of the school holidays. Show dates are 8th, 9th, 10th (matinee), 14th, 15th (two shows- matinee and night show) 16th June.

COST - All cast members will be required to pay Society membership ($10 under 18 or $20 if over 18) on the first rehearsal (unless they have already paid for the 2019 year). Anyone over 18 will be required to provide a Volunteers Working with Children clearance number as required under Society policy. There will also be a production fee of $60 for each cast member. This will pay for a show jumper, some cast social functions and a show program.

FINALLY – Nearly everyone who comes to auditions wants a lead part, only a few can be given the lead roles. The great thing about Shrek Jnr is that there are many smaller, spoken roles. We ask that you audition with the intention of being a part of this wonderful production, no matter what role you are given. It takes an ensemble to make a show. Everyone’s part is integral to the success of this production. It’s also important to remember that not everyone who auditions will be cast in this production. It doesn’t mean that you not talented enough or that you will never gain a role in any future production – it just means that perhaps you needed a little more preparation or perhaps this production is not for you. Auditions are a great learning experience and much like trying out for a sporting team at school, some make it, some don’t. But you will never know, if you don’t give it a go!

See you at Auditions!
